Blame freedom of information and jealousy, claims Steen. His private life (and your public money) is nobody’s business

In a possible set back to the Conservative’s bid for control of Devon County Council, Conservative MP for Totnes Antony Steen has blamed jealousy at his big house as the reason for his stepping down, rather than the fact he spent public money on rabbits defences.

In yet another serious lack of judgement and a further indication that politicians are out of step with the public, he blabbed to the BBC’s Becky Milligan.

“What right does the public have to interfere in my private life?” asked the public servant. “None,” he answers for us, just in case we disagree.

“Do you know what this reminds me of this whole episode? An episode of Coronation Street. This is a kangaroo court going on.”

Ahh, yes the famous one when Rita Duckworth filed her expenses to get the public to pay her £87,000 over four years for her second home, including payments for tree surgery and an inspection of at least 500 trees on her estate, a multi-million pound home in Devon, with ther payments including guarding shrubs against rabbits and maintaining a separate cottage…. dahhhhh, dah-dah, dahh-dah-dah…. (roll credits and prepare for The Bill)

We picked the story up from the Evening Standard.

What they did . .

-introduced over 3,000 new criminal offences since 1997; more new laws over the last ten years, then in the past 100

-insidiously politicised the police force, bowing down to their demands for draconian terror legislation (that is evidently, routinely abused). They are continuing to criminalise dissent by covertly monitoring and surveilling protesters and peaceful demonstrators, and, what's more, they are planning to come for the DNA of YOUR children

-privatised national security, installed 4 million CCTV cameras in London alone, introduced taxation by stealth (millions of speed cameras) and continue to violate international law in their pursuit of a database which tracks everyone's phone calls, emails and internet traffic

-introduced top-up fees, thereby removing the very notion of a free education; one that most of them enjoyed. They couldn't find the money to support our great universities but, when Dubya came a-knocking, they conjured up well over £5.3 billion to throw at a brutal and brutally-misguided war that was, in fact, unnecessary and highly illegal.

-they lied to the British public about the reasons for going to war. In their quest for a smoking gun, they cynically took the UN route whilst knowing full-well that they had already committed the country to full-scale military support behind the scenes. During this period, they fixed the facts "around" the policy; knowingly lying to the electorate time and again about the reasons; which were, and remain, US dominance in the Middle East. They recently vetoed the release of the cabinet minutes under the FOI act. Nothing to hide, nothing to fear?

-after selling wars in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Iraq on "humanitarian" grounds, they stood by and let Israeli troops massacre innocent civilians in Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. In fact, they actively sought to stop UN calls for a ceasefire in Lebanon. This country has sold many, many weapons to Israel.

-they have sought to govern with the politics of fear time and again; with politically-motivated terror arrests and subversive leakings to the press from one of the many shadowy "servants" in Whitehall

-they have actively installed and have encouraged "careerism" and impotent "party loyalty" in British Politics. This has undermined the very substance of democracy in our Parliament

-they rewarded the failures of the presiding banking elite with VAST sums of public money. This was public-purse plundering of the highest, most treasonous order

It speaks to the perceived materialism of the Brits doesn't it? That the only time a Brit gets angry is when he/she feels like they are being ripped off. This expenses fiasco ain't pretty but there is a bigger picture. All of the above from a Labour government? There should have been rioting in the streets a long time ago. They have always feathered their own nests and the revelations shouldn't really surprise anyone, yet, above and beyond that, we aren't dealing with a group of petty thieves. These are a morally-subversive cabal of undemocratic automatons, of torturers and war criminals. They stand in defense of the indefensible and, for that alone, they should be removed not just from Parliament, but from society itself.

... and as for the Lib Dems, their Westminster candidate for Totnes Julian Brazil has been found guilty of bullying according to an article posted in the Western Morning News last week ("Councillor guilty of bullying" Thursday, May 21).

The Totnes electorate includes Brixham, a bit of Paignton, Dartmouth, Kingsbridge and Totnes, and all the tiny villages in between. So the hippy folk of Totnes are somewhat outvoted. Still, time to call time on the Tories.

Hi Heather - that'll be second home owners like Mr Steen himself (or, as we're sure rappers will call him in the future: "The Great Has-Been, Anthony Steen"

From Facebook

Andy
Twat. Him and his whole tribe. Maybe it's about time Totnes elected a representative who's more in line with it's supposed social and artistic awareness. Then again, perhaps that's just an urban myth.

Heather
Unfortunately there are too many people living around Totnes who would agree with and vote for this vile idiot .
I agree that Totnes should elect a representative who reflects the great social and artistic values of the town but fear it'll never happen whilst the NIMBY'S and 2nd home owners prevail ..

Of course there is another potential use for his trees which involves a length of rope. Surely this arrogant, pompous old prat should be thrown out of the Tory party without waiting for the next election.

Trained barrister and MP Anthony Steen... anyone spotting a public speaking theme here... has apologised for his outburst. He says he was 'deeply upset'. Hence all that nonsense coming out when he spoke. Worrying isn't it, him supposedly a professional an' all.

And who knows what gobbeldygook the fella will come out with now that we know he's probably going to pocket around £100,000 more through various allowances by the time he retires come next election, and that's before the generous final salary pension scheme (which we thought died out long ago...).

Jealous much?
