Liberal Democrat European Parliamentary elections candidates for the South West of England and Gibraltar are bemoaning their claims about the no-shows from the Labour Party candidates in election hustings and public meetings across the region.
Lib Dem Euro candidate Kay Barnard (who will be in Newton Abbot, Devon, with Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg on Wednesday, May 27) told the PRSD: “During the campaign so far, I’ve attended several public meetings where Labour have sadly failed to put up a candidate.
“In some of these cases, people have travelled for miles at their own expense to hear the candidates speak and to question them on their policies – it’s only fair that they are given the chance to hear what all of the main parties have to say.
“Politics in this country has been badly affected by the recent Westminster expenses scandal – it’s important that European candidates int he South West do their bit to rebuild trust in democracy by engaging with voters.”
We’re not surprised by these allegations. We can count on one hand the campaigning local and regional politicians are carrying out.
Through the tireless Labour PPC for South Devon Luke Pollard we know that Labour are out in force Ivybridge. And we know that the Lib Dems have also been carrying out a door step campaign – albeit in one area of South Devon. And we’ve had contact with Katie Hopkins and some press releases from Giles Chichester. But nothing from anyone else. And the mail@conservatives4devon.com email keeps bouncing back (with increasing irony).
We put it down to an out-of-touch arrogance on behalf of the prospective candidates, especially at the county level (only one has got in touch with us compared to a total five MEPs), but what’s your opinion.
Are county candidates out-of-touch and arrogant? Will you vote? And, what does it matter who takes control of county hall or sits in Europe, aren’t they ‘all the same’. Comments please.
