Lib Dems claim Labour no-shows at public meetings. We say most candidates are arrogant

Liberal Democrat European Parliamentary elections candidates for the South West of England and Gibraltar are bemoaning their claims about the no-shows from the Labour Party candidates in election hustings and public meetings across the region.

Lib Dem Euro candidate Kay Barnard (who will be in Newton Abbot, Devon, with Lib Dem leader Nick Clegg on Wednesday, May 27) told the PRSD: “During the campaign so far, I’ve attended several public meetings where Labour have sadly failed to put up a candidate.

“In some of these cases, people have travelled for miles at their own expense to hear the candidates speak and to question them on their policies – it’s only fair that they are given the chance to hear what all of the main parties have to say.

“Politics in this country has been badly affected by the recent Westminster expenses scandal – it’s important that European candidates int he South West do their bit to rebuild trust in democracy by engaging with voters.”

We’re not surprised by these allegations. We can count on one hand the campaigning local and regional politicians are carrying out.

Through the tireless Labour PPC for South Devon Luke Pollard we know that Labour are out in force Ivybridge. And we know that the Lib Dems have also been carrying out a door step campaign – albeit in one area of South Devon. And we’ve had contact with Katie Hopkins and some press releases from Giles Chichester. But nothing from anyone else. And the mail@conservatives4devon.com email keeps bouncing back (with increasing irony).

We put it down to an out-of-touch arrogance on behalf of the prospective candidates, especially at the county level (only one has got in touch with us compared to a total five MEPs), but what’s your opinion.

Are county candidates out-of-touch and arrogant? Will you vote? And, what does it matter who takes control of county hall or sits in Europe, aren’t they ‘all the same’. Comments please.

Just in case you want to see what Labour is getting up to...tomorrow Labour are delivering 4,000 election leaflets in one day in Ivybridge. Look out for volunteers in the town from 10am. we are aiming to deliver a leaflet through every door in Ivybridge this weekend - our fourth complete sweep of the town in the last six months. Over the last six months we've deliverred 34,000 leaflets across SW Devon from Woolwell to Wembury, Plymstock to Plympton. Each leaflet has been delivered by a volunteer and not a paid delivery person or as part of a paid for inclusion in a local newspaper. If you'd like to join in we're meeting at 10am outside Ivybridge Town Hall for the morning canvass and then at 2pm for the afternoon canvass. Ivybridge Labour will also be campaigning every day at 6pm meeting in the same place until polling day. At a time when politics is full of examples why not to vote we're trying to give people in Ivybridge and SW Devon a reason to vote, for a positive campaign promoting a local person who wants to fight for his community - Dave Trigger in Ivybridge. Come along if you'd like to know more.

I think you've proved the point about the disconnection between the 'political class' and the voters. It will be interesting to see how low the turnout is on June 4th. I can only presume that they don't want our votes, assume they are going to get our votes anyway or are far too busy fiddling their expenses to care.
