Tweeted news of Plymouth City Council’s ban on Twitter

As we at the PRSD are working hard to increase involvement and debate in the meatier matters of the day – our Twitter #devonelection campaign a case in point – we’ve picked up the Tweeted news (how ironic) that Plymouth City Council has banned the used of Twitter.

Here’s what BigLouis Tweeted: “News just in! Plymouth City Council banned everyone from useing Twitter! Meanies! Blow to connected politicians and eGovernment! Luddites!”

Maybe it’s a response to last week’s shenanigans with Tudor Evans’ and Vivien Pengelly’s Twitter-Gate or maybe they just don’t see the social networking site as conducive to the council’s goals.

So long council Tweeters.

‘Suppose we’ll just have to catch the whispers at the back of the bikeshed, just like the good ole days.

I wonder whether the councillors have misjudged the public mood with this. It's a bit rich to compare the situation with Iran (@CouncillorBill - 'So Plymouth City Council has now been joined by the Islamic Republic of Iran in blocking Facebook!') when the councillors are self-evidently spending all day tweeting rubbish.

On Facebook James Wilkinson commented:

"thats a good thing! what are these people doing spending their time on these social networking sites? I welcome this change as the council's employees should be focusing on their jobs and serving their community. I very happy to hear this, now maybe Plymouth city council can focus on making Plymouth "great" and lets face it - there is a lot of work to do to make Plymouth "great"

Also I hope this will help the council to focus on where exactly they spend their (our) money because in the past the council have made some very bad decisions on spending their budget. Back along the Plymouth city Council blew three years of the christmas decoration budget in one go! thats where the blue LED christmas tree lights came from (a total waste of money)."

BigLouis Tweeted:
The people affected are Councillors who use it as part of their work. PCC IT Policy would prevent Twittering, EBay etc at work.

Think Anon may have a point. Here are some recent Twitter posts by local councillors:

@CouncillorTudor - 'Just seen The Hangover. C'mon, we've all had a night like that...'

@CouncillorNicky - 'Plymouth Herald. If a man 'indecently' exposes himself - how does he do it 'decently'? Just a thought.'

@CouncillorBill - 'I wonder if Vivien Pengelly will find this tweet offensive!!!!'

I don't pay tax so civil servants can sit around socialising on 'social' networks?

If communication is something these people lack without the likes of Twitter then God help our country!

Get real people! Twitter, like most social network systems are data mining and advertising machines.... they are a distraction to the job at hand....

eGovernment doesn't require social networking sites laced with mindless advertising to aid communities!

Keep the likes of Twitter, Bebo, Facebook, Myspace and the rest of that rubbish to your spare time and get on with running the country!
