The second entry to our Moor Poets midsummer experiment, where we asked members of the Moor Poets to take a picture of what inspired them at noon on Sunday, June 21, has produced an unexpected response from Simon Williams.
He told the PRSD: “I often write from news items I’ve read, particularly if they’re oddball pieces. I used to write from the ‘Fascinating Facts’ on the backs of crisp packets. I then did a set based on entries in the Guinness Book of Records.
“More recently, I use the BBC News site to provide a lot of snippets, some of which work out as poems. This screen, captured at noon, relates to a news item from a couple of years back, which did end up as a villanelle, one of those strange formal poems where lines repeat in every stanza as well as having strict rhyme.”
