Katie Marie‘s taken a trip down memory lane, and has turned out to have been a quite cool ’80s chick. How cool were you?

It’s been a real emotional roller coaster for me, mainly due to the very sad news of MJ Like so many people he was someone that I grew up with as a child and his music has inspired me a huge amount, it’s all very sad on a lot of levels. So 30mins of last week’s Acoustic PM show featured listeners’ requests for Michael Jackson tunes which was so kewl So many great songs that sparked off oodles of memories for me!
I had a wonderful conversation with a friend of mine who, like me, was an ’80s child, and very similar to a pair of old peeps, we were jibba-jabbering away about the good old days!
First on our list was music players – today we’re all popping into Currys and Comet to check out all the latest gadgets and gizgos, oggling through the locked glass at cabinets at various iPods and cameras. Well back then we had those very same locked glass cabinets, but instead of drooling over fancy iPod shuffles we were staring in awe at giant, brightly coloured tape players commonly known as… the Walkman! Complete with tacky wire headphones and the choice of yellow or red, the Walkman was defo the most coolest thing ANYONE could own!
It had three buttons, Play, Stop and Fast Forward (so if you wanted to rewind the tape you had to take it out of the player and turn it over… them were the days!!).
Then we were talking about the music we played on our very swanky Walkmans, for me New Kids on the Block (or NKOTB as they were later known) were played quite a bit along with Now that’s What I Call Music 5 (I think they’re on about 70 odd at the moment aren’t they?? lol).
Then, of course, you had to think about what to wear to go with your brand new rather swanky Walkman. Would it be something cool and understand? Perhaps a white coloured t-shirt and a pair of jeans to really make your Red Walkman stand out? Oh God no! This was the era of the hideously coloured and very bright shell suit, which I rather worryingly did own. ‘And what colour was your shell suit then Katie?’ I hear you cry, well… pink…bright pink… and when I say bright, I mean that it was so bright it would make your eyes bleed if you starred at it for too long! And just to top it all off, it had a nice blue and green stripe on the top to give it that extra bit of clashing colours!
So now you’ve got it all pictured, me strolling down the street with my brand new red Walkman attached to my trousers, NKOTB playing so loud that although I’m wearing my rather tacky headphones the whole world could hear what I was polluting my ears with… and then to top it all off I’m wearing a stupidly bright pink shell suit… nice!
… and no before you ask you can’t see any photographic evidence!!
So do feel free to share your stories in the comment box below – were you as trendy as me? Did you own a rather tacky shell suit? And if so what colour was yours? Get in touch and share your horror stories
