Socialists (remember them?) fight Barnstaple, North Devon, incinerator plans

There’s been plenty of opposition to a waste incinerator on the flood plain in the middle of Barnstaple – the Green Party has been banging on about it, and so have the Devon Socialist Party, along with the North Devon Socialists in their Devon Residents Against Incinerators in their Drain campaign. And worryingly private company executives sported Devon County Council badges at a consultation.

The Drain campaign of market stalls, leafleting, letter writing and petitioning to build support, even attracting the attention of North Devon’s Lib Dem MP Nick Harvey.

But why fight an incinerator? Well, they say there’s the issue of nanoparticles, reduced incentive to recycle, threat to tourism, four to five times the carbon dioxide emissions per unit electricity than a typical coal-fired power station, and cheap energy for Tesco.

They say the fight will continue. To find out more visit the Devon Socialist Party site
