More deaths than births in Torbay, plus more people leave for abroad

Not only has Nick Bye been rejected by the voters of Totnes, but he seems to be rejected by the living in Torbay, too.

According the latest population stats, not only did deaths outstrip births, but more people left Torbay for abroad than arrived, and even those settling in Torbay from other parts of the UK fell.

Only 500 people came to the area from abroad (the same as the previous year) with 800 leaving for foreign soil (rising from 300 the previous year), and those moving to Torbay from other parts of the country was down to 5,700 from 6,800.

To be fair the number leaving Torbay for the rest of the county also fell from 5,800 to 5,300. With Torbay’s total population dropping by the grand total of 200 to 134,000 in 2008.

The South Hams population was static at 83,500 and the numbers in Teignbridge rose by 800 to 127,600.

Nationally, the UK population rose to more than 61 million for the first time to 61.4 million – the highest numerical rise since 1962, according to the thisissouthdevon, which put the hike down to a baby boom, but as it’s part of the Daily Mail stable couldn’t resist mentioning Eastern European immigration.
