Equality ambassadors can hold public bodies to account to end discrimination

Equality South West is training ‘equality ambassadors’ to ensure public bodies meet their legal and moral obligations to promote equality and end discrimination.

Examples the organisation gives of how public bodies have failed sections of the community include one council which kept the key to an accessible toilet in an office that was inaccessible to wheelchair users; another which withdrew funding from a women’s domestic violence support service; and several councils which effectively barred disabled drivers by introducing ticket barriers to car parks.

Equality South West’s Colette Bennett told the PRSD: “All these problems could have been avoided if the councils had followed the correct procedures and assessed the potential impact of these decisions before implementing them.”

The organisation is holding an equality ambassadors training day for members of community organisations to find out how to hold public bodies to account.

More details are on Equality South West’s website.
