Sculpture of Socialist and reformer Leo Abse by Ashburton artist Luke Shepherd to be donated to National Museum Cardiff

A sculpture of Socialist social reformer Leo Abse by Devon sculptor Luke Shepherd is to be donated to the National Museum, Cardiff, according to our Arts+Culture site.

It will be the second sculpture by the Ashburton-based artists to be displayed at the museum.

Abse, who was related to Luke, is best known for his private members bill to decriminalize homosexuality, passed in 1967.

Luke told Arts+Culture: “Growing up I never took much interest in his political activities, despite Leo being my second cousin. My parents spoke very highly of him, but as a family we didn’t see that much of him as he was so often in Parliament. His Jewish approach to community was at the heart of his passion for equality and I’m proud to have captured his nobility in this bust.”
