Morris Dancers were out in Newton Abbot’s Asda car park as part of the beating the bounds ceremony took place on Saturday and Sunday, September 26 and 27.
Beating the bounds is a walk around the boundary of the town, and dates back to Saxon times, when a group of people would inspect the area’s borders to check the was no ‘encroachment’. They might even point out where walls need fixing.
On this occasion, according to thisisouthdevon, historians, councillors and residents took two days for the 17-mile jaunt around Newton Abbot.
Newton Abbot Town Councillor Carol Bunday said: “On our first day we traced the boundaries along the banks of the River Teign from the Town Quay.
“We also walked as far as Kingskerswell, up to Abbotskerswell and came back into Bakers Park.
“The following day we traced boundaries up to Stover and back again.”
