Seaton, Sainsbury's, Tesco and regeneration – how do they fit together?

The whole Seaton Tesco/Sainsbury’s debacle struck us a little odd – the public consultation and the planning meeting came out in favour of Sainsbury’s yet the councillors plumped for Tesco. Huh? And then Seaton council sought legal advice to stop the development. Hmm. So we did a bit of digging – hey, it’s what we’re here for.

Through all the literature there was a strong involvement of the Seaton Regeneration Programme Board, so we dug out the members and compared and contrasted with those on the Seaton Town Council Planning Committee and the East Devon District Council planning committee.

1. There’s someone from Tesco on the Seaton Regeneration Programme Board Members, and although there is no website for the Seaton Regeneration Programme Board there is one for the Tesco and the Regeneration of Seaton.

2. One member wears three different hats at the meeting – they are said to represent East Devon District Council and are also a member of Seaton Town Council as well as one on Devon County Council. Who do they actually represent?

3. The list of members shows two people represent Seaton Town Council; there are also two people who are District and Town Councillors as well, see query point 2

4. One person is shown as representing the county but they are no longer a member of Devon County Council. Like, duh.

If anyone could shed any further light into the goings on of these bodies, we’d be happy to hear them. Comments below, please.

All this has been obtained from EDDC, Seaton Town Council and the Devon County Council websites.
