Getting to know how the political system works is going to become even more important, even crucial for the survival of many organisations that we have become to rely upon. A few things that are happening at the moment affecting the voluntary sector:
* A real fall in donations, interest income and availability of grant funding
* The threat of up to 15% cuts in public expenditure after next year’s election
* Conservative-controlled councils such as Devon holding back expenditure until, post-election, they can release funds and claim credit
* Both parties getting more interested in Social Enterprises, to the extent of hiving off entire sections of local authorities such as Social Service departments.
You’re absolutely right Kevin – there are a lot of issues which affect the voluntary sector which are actually political or to do with decisions made in Parliament. Knowing how to engage with Parliament and get your views across is important to make sure that you can have a say in those decisions. Parliamentary Outreach is here to help you gain the knowledge and confidence to get your voice heard. Come to the workshop on Friday, or contact me on the number/email address above to find out more.
