Teignbridge Lib Dems support Reheat Britain environmental heating project

Support for the Reheat Britain campaign to create a boiler scrappage scheme – replacement of uneconomical, wasteful boilers can be carried out with a subsidy – is gaining support in South Devon.

Reheat Britain, which was inspired by the government’s car scrappage scheme, will be put in front of Teignbridge Council by the district’s Liberal Democrats on Monday, November 9, and Newton Abbot MP Richard Younger Ross has tabled an Early Day Motion in Parliament for the scheme.

Lib Dem Cllr David Cox, for West Teignmouth, said on his blog: “The Boiler Scrappage Scheme makes sense on many different levels. It is a great way of stimulating demand in these tough economic times, saving jobs and creating new ones.

“From an environmental point of view, every old boilers replaced will help the country meet its carbon reduction targets. Saving households £200 year on their heating bill will help fight fuel poverty.

“By replacing the UK’s old, inefficient gas boilers it would be possible to achieve a major environmental benefit, while at the same time creating jobs and an economic boost, and reducing fuel poverty.

“It would work along similar lines to the car scrappage scheme, however unlike the car scheme, it would have the advantage of cutting emissions and creating a significant UK employment boost, rather than in the car factories abroad.

“Existing regulations mean that virtually all new boilers on the market are now highly efficient and A-rated, and best of all the two leading manufacturers, Worcester and Baxi are here in the UK employing Brfitish workers.”
