Listen up all you social entrepreneurs, there’s another project teaching you how to get the most out of being YOU. The Lively Leadership project will give you all the skills you need to lead. We spoke to Sarah Stevenson, project manager at Cosmic for more
Why has the project set up, when and how long will it continue?
Lively Leadership was set up by Cosmic using Capacity Builders funding because we recognise that the help that leaders in social enterprises (or indeed, leaders who want to work in or develop social enterprises) can access is only generally about business development, very rarely does it concern personal development. In a nutshell, it’s designed to enable social enterprise leaders of all levels to develop their confidence, competence and commitment in order to inspire their organisations and their people with passion and a sense of shared purpose. The project is funded until end March 2011.
Can you only become a member if you’re invited?
Lively Leadership is open to anybody in the South West who is a leader in or aspires to be a leader in a social enterprise. We also believe that anybody can be a leader in their organisation, so it’s not limited to chief executives or senior management level.
What’s the cost?
There is no cost to initial participation. Every member gets one year’s free membership from the point at which they sign up – this gives them access to the members area of the website and eight hours of direct support. Each member can choose how they use this eight hours – it might be mentoring (we have a number of mentors working on the project to help and support the members), by attending workshops, action learning sets or a blend of all three. The idea is that the project is flexible and each member can tailor it to meet their individual needs.
How many membership places are there and why are they limited?
We only have funding for 100 members. We will be looking for ways to extend this project, through other funding sources – and also working with the membership to find out if they would place a financial value on the support they have received once their year of free support has ended.
What would constitute the project’s success?
The definition of success will come from the members themselves – has their membership of Lively Leadership helped them to develop their personal skill to the benefit of both the individual and their organisation?
Sarah Stevenson, thank you
• Cosmic has also received funding from the ESF to develop an extension to Lively Leadership. This extension is called The Pioneer Programme and is being managed by Cosmic and offered by the Social Enterprise Leadership Partnership (SELP) which is a collaboration between key agencies in the South West to deliver specific leadership training to managers in social enterprises.
For this programme Cosmic has funding for 24 people who will benefit from two residential workshops, five development modules of their choice, 18 hours of support from a mentor, a grant of up to £1,450 to help fund additional learning opportunities and up to £2,000 wage substitution for their organisation to allow them to participate in the scheme.
