Torbay ArtsBase is dead... long live Creative Torbay? What's next for art in the Bay?

The controversial beast that was Torbay ArtsBase has been put down, killed off or sent to the big farm in the country, depending on your preferred innuendo. In its place is the Creative Torbay website, which incidentally and with no connection, has a new section for forums and debate launched today.

The news of the delay to the ArtsBase awards broke on the People’s Republic of South Devon with a comment from ArtsBase chair Kevin Alexander.

Former ArtsBase chairman Kevin Alexander told the PRSD: ‘It is always sad when something ends, but I am hopeful that the positives that were created by Torbay ArtsBase will continue to have benefits within the arts community in the area.

“The recognition that there are a great many talented artists, musicians, performers, writers and so on living and working in this beautiful area can not go away. The recognition that we should be celebrating this quality of local activity will not go away.

“It is just that we (the retiring ArtsBase committee) think that the vehicle for this recognition now needs to be owned by the whole of the community. Hopefully discussions about how/where/when and so on will take place, perhaps via the newly launched forums on creativetorbay.com.’

The organisation, which was intended to promote art within the Bay, has come in for stick, but what’s your assessment of Torbay ArtsBase, and what, if anything, should replace it?
