Some 520 people under 25 years olds, resident in Teignbridge, claimed job seekers allowance in September 2009, more than double the number in the same month last year and almost three times as many as in September 2007.
These figures come from the UK Statistics Authority in response to a parliamentary question put down by Teign Lib Dem MP Richard Younger-Ross and reflect the national trend that shows the rate of unemployment among young people for the three months to September is 18% – the highest since records began in this category in 1992.
Richard told the PRSD: “The impact of unemployment on the young can be dramatic. I have witnessed the harm inflicted upon young people in the 1980’s by the Thatcher Government refusing to help them.”
“There is a danger that unemployment among the young can lead to a lifetime of unemployment.”
And with the data showing 1,050 young people in the Bay are out of work and receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance – around a third of claimants – Torbay Lib Dem MP Adrian Sanders said the figures released yesterday show ‘it is clear young people are those being hit hardest’.
