Devon picks up top renewable energy prize

Devon County Council’s Renewable Energy for Devon (RE4D) has won a top green prize from Regen South West, along with other environmental wins in the county at the South West Green Energy Awards (which cost around £125 to get in, although dinner was included).

Devon picked up Most Pro-Active Local Authority for it’s renewable work with RE4D and other projects.

The county council wasn’t the only Devon winner to be announced at the RegenSW awards. National Trust property, Castle Drogo, near Okehampton, came away with Best Renewable Energy System for its biomass boiler and Exeter-based company Sun Gift Solar was awarded Best Installer of the Year for its design of renewable energy technologies such as its solar hot water and underfloor heating systems.

Earlier this year, RE4D was the winner of a national Ashden Award for Sustainable Energy.

Some of what RE4D does:

  • Free training for over 90 renewable energy supplier places and the creation of 90 new jobs in the renewable energy sector.
  • £4.2 M in energy savings for organisations installing renewable energy technologies.
  • Carbon emission savings of 1695 tonnes per year.
  • £210 k in capital grants awarded to 22 organisations in 2009.

Other activities by Devon County Council include:

  • Biomass boiler at County Hall – Woodchips come from a local supplier to run the boiler which is preventing emissions of 350 tonnes of CO2 per year and saving upwards of £20,000 per year.
  • Green Challenge Fund – A scheme to help schools and colleges update the fabric of their buildings to reduce carbon emissions, increase efficiency and reduce fuel costs.
  • Bideford College – An award winning college for its environmentally friendly design with sustainable drainage system, living roof garden and woodchip boiler.
  • Montgomery School, Exeter – the first UK ‘passive haus’ zero carbon school presently in the design stage
  • Cosy Devon – A scheme which offers free or discounted loft and cavity wall installation for homeowners in Devon.

  • Makes you proud to be Devon – for all the crticism at least Devon council are making significant inroads into using renewable energy.

The good people of Devon will soon be able to help too – the introduction of the fee-in-tariff to encourage people to generate renewable energy in their own home looks very attractive.
