Teignbridge MP Richard Younger-Ross will be out on the streets of Newton Abbot saying ‘save and fairly fund the concessionary bus fare scheme’ (that’s free bus passes for the Twilries) on Saturday, November 21. The Government’s intention to slash Teignbridge District Council’s grant for the concessionary bus scheme by £270,000 for 2010/11.
Richard told the PRSD: “This scheme is a boon for many pensioners across the district. It acts as a life line for those on low incomes and those without transport, as well as encouraging others to leave the car at home which is good for the environment.
“If these plans go ahead, the cuts would be the equivalent of a 4 per cent council rise even if nothing else is affected.”
Richard will be urging people to sign a petition calling for fair funding for the concessionary bus scheme.
“We have until the end of December to respond to the Government’s consultation” he said.
