To pay or not to pay? Would you put your hand in your pocket for local news on the web?

As an experiment in whether on-line readers will pay for their news, regional newspaper publisher Johnston Press is to erect pay walls at six of its weekly paper websites.

The papers are the Worksop Guardian, the Ripley & Heanor News, the Whitby Gazette, the Northumberland Gazette, the Ayrshire-based Carrick Gazette and the Southern Reporter in Selkirk.

Users will be restricted from viewing content beyond the home page unless they pay £5 for a three-month subscription, the equivalent of 40p per week.

• Is this the future for on-line news? Would you pay to access the Plymouth Herald, Herald Express, the Western Morning News or the Express & Echo? Comments below, please.

• Here at the PRSD we’re committed to keeping our news as accessible as possible – which means no paywall! But it does mean we rely on advertising and donations.
