Teignbridge-backed boiler scheme in Alistair Darling's Pre-Budget Report

The Reheat Britain boiler project, which has been backed by Teignbridge MP Richard Younger-Ross, and Teignbridge Council, will be included in Pre-Budget Report.

The boiler scrappage scheme, which is based on that for old cars, with households being paid £300 to trade in old boilers for new green models, falls under the incentives and stimulus package of the Pre-Budget Report.

South Devon politicos had been big supporters of the boiler scrappage scheme.

As reported on the PRSD, Teignbridge Council had unanimously agreed to support the Reheat Britain campaign, to such an extent it was considering setting up its own, local scheme if the government didn’t back the national one.

And the Richard Younger-Ross tabled an Early Day Motion to the House of Commons in support of the scheme.

Lib Dem Cllr David Cox, for West Teignmouth, said on his blog: “The Boiler Scrappage Scheme makes sense on many different levels. It is a great way of stimulating demand in these tough economic times, saving jobs and creating new ones.

“From an environmental point of view, every old boilers replaced will help the country meet its carbon reduction targets. Saving households £200 year on their heating bill will help fight fuel poverty.

“By replacing the UK’s old, inefficient gas boilers it would be possible to achieve a major environmental benefit, while at the same time creating jobs and an economic boost, and reducing fuel poverty.

“It would work along similar lines to the car scrappage scheme, however unlike the car scheme, it would have the advantage of cutting emissions and creating a significant UK employment boost, rather than in the car factories abroad.”

  • Teignbridge MP Richard Younger-Ross told the PRSD: “I am pleased the Government is taking note of the campaign and that we have influenced its thinking.

“This is a great scheme both in terms of the environment and creating new jobs. There are 4.5 million boilers in the UK which are less than 70 per cent efficient and by replacing just some of these with new efficient condensing boilers, we could save thousands of tonnes of carbon emissions, create more work for British manufacturers and in turn create new jobs.”

Those over 60 years old and who do not qualify for the warm front scheme can already claim for a £300 ‘rebate’ on a new boiler installation. Just call the warmfront organisation for an application. visit http://www.warmfront.co.uk/heating-rebate-scheme.htm for more details. Is the proposed new scheme an extension of the current one? Having recently reached 60 I have not received any advice of the rebate, only information of the winter fuel payment scheme, is this an oversight? I’m sure that on reching 60 many would like to know about the existing scheme, where are the adverts? I only found out because British Gas set me an outrageous quote that included a warm front discount, however I know I do not qualify as I am not in receipt of benefits: so i checked the warm front website. Hope this will help more folk…
