Teignbridge gets a glowing report from the Audit Commission. What do you think of YOUR council?

Expect glowing reports from councils today (Wednesday, December 9), as the  Audit Commission’s OnePlace Organisation Assessment is published. Teignbridge Council did so well, that it would be easier to ask what it wasn’t praised for.

There’s soaring ‘community spirit’ superb ‘strong leadership from councillors and senior managers’ and praise for the £2.3 million raised through managing its buildings and assets, plus there’s the district’s environmental work, quick action to improve performance, and to top it all, people feel safe.

And, if you can take any more, Teignbridge also received praise for its partnership work focusing on rural poverty and isolation, skin cancer and healthy eating; and for its popular community health schemes such as Walk This Way and Dance This Way.

In all, the council got three out of four – which with all the hoopla, you’d think would be higher. Still, it has been doing its bit to ease the credit crunch:
•    interest free loan to local Credit Union to encourage saving and provide an alternative to doorstep lenders
•    faster bill payments to local businesses (95.95% paid within 30 days on average);  and
•    funding to help benefits services and the Citizens Advice Bureaux respond to the rises in demand.

It’ll be interesting to see how that fares now the chief executive Nicola Bulbck is set to split her time between Teignbridge and Torridge
