Teignmouth's new £6.8M arts centre plans to replace Carlton Theatre

The Carlton Theatre, Teignmouth, is getting £6.8M makeover to turn it into a new arts centre for the South Devon town.

The planning application is now in for the new Carlton Centre, which includes a theatre, art space, library, coffee shop and restaurant, and is likely to be considered by councillors in March.

Arts and community groups have joined councillors in the two years of development and consultation that have led to the submissions.

Seen as a landmark building on the seafront at Teignmouth, the new Carlton Centre is part of the continuing regeneration of the seaside resort.

If approved, it is designed to replace the existing Carlton Theatre, which is in need of substantial investment and is considered beyond economic refurbishment. Added to which, the site could be better used to support a wider range of activity for the town’s residents and visitors.

The new centre will offer a 220 auditorium with retractable seating, leaving a large hall for a variety of uses.  The first floor will offer a balcony with commanding views out to sea and towards Shaldon.

To achieve the design, it has been agreed in principle with the neighbouring Den Bowling Club, for the bowling green to be realigned and improved. This will help create a new wide path leading from the town to the seafront and serving the Carlton Centre

As a result, a strip of the Den grass, approximately 9 metres wide, will need to be used but this is not expected to adversely affect events held in the area.
