From a car park off the M5 to a plastic bag behind a wheelie bin in South Harrow, the 2009 Chestnut Appeal art auction took organiser David Squires to many an unusual location.
David, who is from the Chestnut Appeal for Prostate Cancer, told the PRSD: “It all started with an idea I had on a visit to the Tate in St Ives. It was really busy despite the sunshine outside and really showed the popularity of contemporary art. So I thought, how about organising an art auction!’
That was in 2009 and the success of the auction has promoted the charity to start organising another for 2010, the year the Chestnut Appeal will celebrate 10 years – 10 years in which they have helped change the way prostate cancer is treated across the region.
Last year’s auction took place at Bearnes, Hampton & Littlewood in Exeter and raised over £6,500 for the charity. This year the charity is looking to hold the auction in Cornwall and is asking artists if they would like to donate any work.
Artists who donated work in 2009 included Sire Peter Blake, Josie McCoy, Stella Vine, David Harrison, Matthew Burrows, Simeon Stafford, Charles Summers and Anton Goldenstein.
“I was amazed by the response last year and in all we had 130 pieces to auction, works from across the country including London, Bristol, Somerset and Penzance,” said David
If there are any artists who would like to help with this appeal, get in touch with David. The Chestnut Appeal is a charity based in Plymouth, supporting men with prostate cancer and their families across Devon and Cornwall.
