Preferred developer doesn't have to spend a penny on toilet and site at The Downs! Have your say on the future of The Downs

Oddicombe Beach from Babbacombe Downs

The future of The Downs at Babbacombe is on the agenda – apparently the mayor has already made the decision to give away the toilets and site to a preferred developer for no fee or rent. Got an opinion? The St Marychurch Ward Community Partnership is calling for people to let their voices be heard.

There is a St Marychurch Ward Community Partnership meeting on Monday, January 18 in Furrough Cross Church at 7pm. The issue of development on The Downs (building a two storey restaurant on the toilets and viewing platform) will be the main topic.

With the preferred developer chosen, the next stage will be a planning application submitted. The community partnership needs to know what the community feels about this plan before the application is presented so it can make the appropriate representation.

They’ve also asked that this information be passed on to anyone that has – or might have – an interest in the future of The Downs at Babbacombe.

As Torquay dies on it's backside we should be embracing anyone who has the guts to come and try something positive, I had a hospitality business in Torquay and lost my shirt and underpants, my similar site in Newton Abbot is doing great guns because the locals have got behind it. If we allow the rot to continue in the Bay the recovery will be very long and painfull. Give this guy a chance (although I think he is mad)

Wot next? Developing Palace Gardens, The Pavilion and moving the cenetaph was mooted last year, I bet that's going ahead at full steam behind closed doors too. I'm writing to the planners now to object. Torwood Street needs doing and Palm Court but the Downs and Gardens around the Cenetaph don't.

What dark plans are afoot regarding the Grove at Babbacombe Beach and who is putting the money up for the proposed developments on Oddicombe beach ?

I'm running a petition up on Babbacombe Downs at the moment against ANY development on/of the Downs. It's a democratic petition, ie there's one signature sheet for those who want the cafe and one sheet for those who don't want the cafe. In an on-line pole the local paper, The Herald Express, said 63% of their voters wanted the cafe. So far in my petition I've got 100 people signing against the development (in five hours) and not one signatory for the development. Shorley shome mishtake?

That darned Sheriff of Torbayhamshire is up to his old tricks again...?… giving away community resources for nowt?? What can we poor "Third Estate" folk do? "Let them eat chips" is heard shouted from the palaces of Versailesham Marine Drive. Where are Robbin' Hoodie or the Pink Pumpernickel when you need 'em?
And.... Have I mixed too many metaphors?

Whatever, this sort of thing cannot be allowed to go on!
