Teignbridge MP Richard Younger-Ross prefers paywall to Google Juice!

Shadow minister for culture, media and sport

Rumour has it that Teignbridge MP Richard Younger Ross is shadow minister for culture, media and sport. Shame on the Lib Dems if this is true, ’cause old Four-Mirrors Ross (as we’re increasingly likely to call him) seems incredibly out of touch with culture and media, and has insisted on showing a preference to printed media, which keeps the weekly column of what he’s been up to behind its own paywall.

That means if the good voters of Teignbridge need to find out what their MP is up to they need to subscribe to the Dawlish Gazette, or Mid-Devon Advertiser, whose track record on putting the Rt Hon Ross’s words online, even before their paywall was constructed, was shaky at best.

Not all Lib Dems are so narrow minded though, the Torbay MP Adrian Sanders sends his press releases out often before they appear on his own site, and the Prospective Parliamentary Candidates for South West Devon and Plymouth Moor View Anna Pascoe and Stuart Bonar are practically fizzing with ideas, social media and accessibility. And we hope to carry a column from Central Devon Lib Dem hopeful Phil Hutty any time soon.

Of course, we could get RYR’s column from his website – but he hasn’t got one – despite being able to claim funding for one to… you know… keep his constituents who don’t want to buy a paper informed of what he’s up to and has done. Or you could pick it up on his Facebook site, but then you’d have to friend him… and remember to look… and hope that it was updated… (06 January was the latest article we saw).

And what does that say of Ross’s attitude towards younger voters – Tindle, the erstwhile proprietor of said papers, has said he doesn’t want younger readers, and whereas the jury’s still out on how young people access the web, at least with our Google juice and feeds to Bebo, Facebook and Myspace we could inadvertently pick up some youthful eyeballs.

It could be that RYR is just chasing the amounts of money that Newton Abbot Tory hopeful Anne Marie Morris has thrown at the papers.

Which leaves us with a dilemma – we don’t want to condone the media-myopic Younger-Ross – he has dissed us after all – and yet, not even his beloved printed media is covering his press releases, so we don’t want to blacklist him either – we kinda see it as our duty to keep these things as accessible as we can, and where else are you going to find out with such consistency what politicians get up to?

Hi David

Thanks for the support. We must be doing something right to put those papers on the run.

But it's not a healthy situation that Richard is pandering to them.

Come on, David - be fair. I'm sure the Herald Express journalists print your news pretty quickly once they've finished writing all those double-page foreign holiday reviews

Well I love the PRSD, the MDA and Herald have complained I give stuff to you guys before them, I don’t, in reality PRSD put the news up a nanosecond after I press the send button.

RYR did not screw the system like many MPs flipping his home. Mrs Thatcher introduced over generous ‘expenses’ to avoid giving MPs a pay rise. It’s not that unusual HGV drivers used to get an overnight allowance of £70, everyone knew they pocketed the cash and slept in the cab. It suited the employer –no NI payment; and the employee – no PAYE.

Of course Journalists never used to get generous expenses, so it is a totally alien concept to them.

Graham RYR has paid it back. Any thoughts on Giles Chichester MEP and the £400,000+ expenses whoops-a-daisy paid to a company – Chichester Ltd. That’s 100 time more than RYR, not a penny paid back I understand.

David,

You might not get rich being a Lib Dem MP, but RYR has made a good fist of it (and he has a rich pallette) – his expenses claim of £157,841 for 2007-08 includes more than £4,000 for mirrors, a hi-fi and a £1,475 chest of drawers for his rented London flat, and is at the upper end of the Lib Dem claims (did anyone claim more?). Is there any wonder that people are inquisitive about his spending?

Shame on you Graham! History has shown us that MPs are above reproach!

That Richard Younger Ross provides exclusive content for private companies which use it to prop up their pay wall and add a premium for constituents to know what their MP is up to is bad enough, don't you think?

Why share the info, when you can get people to pay for it?

As the posterboy for the Re-Elect Richard Younger-Ross campaign points out, RYR did get the scrappage scheme through. And just read how his friends in the traditional press covered it – you can see why he favours them over us!

Much as this sarcasm is fun, it points to a problem that a shadow minister for culture and media prefers to tie himself in with vested interest media rather than opening out his information to the community.

It's what the kids would call an #epicfail

RYR built a coalition of MPs of all parties and got the government to set up a boiler scrappage scheme, few MPs achieve anything like that in an entire parliamentary career. He holds regular advice surgeries and has helped literally thousands of people. If you want to get rich from politics, you don’t join the Liberal Democrats.

Priceless Graham – because he hasn’t got a website he must be on the fiddle!

Is he not just another insecure self-interested money grabber?

I find it very strange that RYR doesn't have his own website, my own MP has a fairly comphrehensive site where he lists his constituency surgeries, his contact details and various other information. He's also a Lib Dem so the lack of consistency is very surprising. I thought MP's were given an allowance for this sort of thing so it would be interesting to see if RYR is claiming for something he isn't doing?

Hi Tom

Don Foster is the shadow secretary for media, culture, media and the olympics. Richard is a shadow minister.

Last time we spoke to RYR he said the Herald Express had stopped carrying his column. So it's good that we can follow him.

As to not giving us the info in a timely manner – it must be that he just doesn't like us! (we can live with that)

Not sure he is the shadow DCMS Minister-the LD website says that is Don Foster MP. And the Herald Express seems to put his articles online for free.
