Luke Pollard, Labour PPC for South West Devon (and sometime PRSD contributor), fares well in a new study of the country’s most influential MPs and PPCs on Twitter.
Tweetminster’s Twitter & UK Politics report reckons UK PPCs posted a total of 75,530 tweets in 2009 – nearly a third more than our MPs.
Luke rides high in the Top 20 Most Retweeted PPCs list – coming in at number two with 131 tweets.
He’s held off the top spot by PPC for Bristol West Paul Smith, who’s almost 100 tweets ahead.
Lib Dem PPC for Plymouth Moor View and PRSD columnist Stuart Bonar also makes an appearance on the Most Retweeted list, with 36 tweets.
Luke also does well in the Top 20 Number Of Mentions PPC list – coming in at number five (behind Stella Creasy but ahead of Esther Rantzen) with 786 tweets.
Exeter MP and front-bencher Ben Bradshaw languishes at the bottom of the top 20 Number Of Mentions MP list, with just 422 tweets. He doesn’t appear at all in the Most Retweeted MP list.
Either way, the Labour Party dominates the study. Collectively, Labour MPs and PPCs have a greater reach and have more followers than the two other main parties combined.
Tweetminster was launched in 2008 with the goal of making UK politics more open and social.
A year ago there were just four MPs using Twitter – now, there are 111 MPs and 226 PPCs tweeting.

• Mark Thompson produced a list of the Top 20 Lib Dem twitterers. Lying in 17th place is South West MP Graham Watson – but on closer inspection, at the time of publishing, Graham hadn’t posted anything since July 7. An indication of these lists, or the Lib Dems on Twitter?
