Devon’s rural bus services face the chop

Devon Bus Stop

Teignbridge District Council leader Alan Connett is raising the warning flag that rural bus services across Devon face the chop today (Thursday, February 18) as £286,000 is axed from the budget which helps support public transport to some of the most remote communities.

Devon County Council is being cagey about the cuts, but has confirmed it will mean fewer buses in the summer timetable, which starts in May.

Alan Connett quotes himself on his blog and says he says: “The county council supports 200 bus services across the county and these are relied on by many residents. However, from May they are likely to find the frequency has been cut back.

“I have been trying to find out which services will be affected, but at the moment where the axe will fall is being kept under wraps – or is still be worked out by the council’s officers.

“It is so often the case that the devil is in the detail and we just do not know how or when local communities with county council supported bus services will be told about the cut backs in their area.”

For details of the cuts, and for the Lib Dems’ alternative Council Tax-cutting, rural bus-running budget, mosey over to Allan Connet’s blog.

• Rural buses should be the more than the varicous veins of Devon transport system. Comments below, please?
