Not Bad For A Girl: Up in the airwaves with Katie Marie

Singer songerwriter Katie Marie

I hosted the first Acoustic PM of 2010 yesterday afternoon (which is a radio show I host on Soundart Radio) and it was lovely to be back! I’d forgotten just how much fun it was and I’m looking forward to getting back into it all good n proper!

On the gig front I had a really great gig with Nicky Swann last week at a lovely little venue in Dartmouth called The Windjammer. When you first head inside it seems like a very comfy and cozy little pub with lots of chatting and smiling faces. When we all started up everyone fell completely silence and were sooo attentive, which was very much appreciated (as it doesn’t happen too often in this country, especially not on a Saturday night in a pub!).

Nicky and I were also joined by the hugely talented Beth Porter who is a stupidly good cellist and it really did add so much to the sound, it very kewl indeed. The space where we were playing was a wee bit small (not that I minded) and I was very impressed that I managed to swap between guitar, bass guitar and congas without smacking anyone round the head or falling over any leads – horrah!

Miquid Licks is still going really well and I’m enjoying it oodles. I’m happy to report that the many bass riffs are beginning to sink into my tiny little brain (finally!) and I’m really looking forward to our first gig in Cheltenham (and also our second gig @ Exeter’s Mama Stone’s!).

I remember when I was playing drums in local punk band The Reoffenders not too long ago and I used to compare a gig with them to getting on the biggest, scariest roller coaster ride ever! As each song was played at a million miles an hour (and faster a lot of the time!) which being on drums was rather a daunting task – but I just about managed to pull it off ok! So with Miquid Licks, the first comparison that pops into my mind is walking down a dodgy ally late at night and suddenly being faced with 20 highly skilled Ninjas who want open up the biggest can of whop-ass they can find! lol Still, it’s all good fun.

Things with Dan Crisp are moving along nicely too, we’re hopefully going to get some sort of residency going at Mama Stones which would be super dooper nice!

And as for me? Well, now I’ve got these film and TV tunes out the way it’s actually quite nice to be sitting down and working on some acoustical type stuff lol As I mentioned before I’m hoping to start working on recording a new CD pretty soon. I had all the tracks worked out, but I’ve been writing some new material lately which I’d really love to include, as it’s much more upbeat and funkee so I think it would mix well with the tunes I have already… we’ll see!

I’ve also been working on getting my new website up and running… and guess what?… it’s finished! (Yay!) Just got to upload it and do some other computery type things and then it’ll be all ready for you to check out! Looking forward to hearing what you think!

Anyhoozer I’d best shoot off, I’ve got to quickly run through some Miquid Licks stuff and then it’s off to gig with Nicky Swann this evening at The Anchor Inn in Cockwood (kind of near Exeter if you’re wondering…). Should be a good night, come on down if you’re free!

On a wednesday we always know we're home when the car radio cracks into life with soundart radio (it means we are near Totnes and acoustic pm is on).
