The celebration of the wonderful World of Plymouth Women to create an iconic poster representing the achievements and cultural diversity of the city’s female population for International Women’s Days, with a special photoshoot on the Hoe on Monday, March 8.
“The event will primarily be a chance to celebrate and show off our city women,” said Plymouth City Council leader Vivien Pengelly… at least she followed it up with: “But there’s no room for complacency – much more work needs to be done before we can say that women enjoy a completely level playing field in all walks of life.”
Phew! So a big photo is the cornerstone in Plymouth City Council’s attempt to ensure social, political and economy equality for the women in the city?
The photo shoot will include women who have made their mark in such diverse fields as politics, sports, business and the arts. Female firefighters, paramedics, police officers, a women’s rugby team and female vicar will be among the participants.
But the event is open to all Plymouth women, who are asked to rally at Smeaton’s Tower at 10am. The photo shoot is expected to last about an hour.
Everyone taking part is asked to either wear or bring something purple – the colour of the International Women’s Day logo – and women who work in uniform are asked to wear it on the day…
