The South Devon Green Party is set to split itself in two in a reorganisation that will come too late for the General Election.
The South Devon Green Party – reportedly the largest in the UK – has grown so big that it needs to be reogranised into two separate local parties.
The South Devon Green Party will continue, but a Totnes and District group will form a new Green Party, just for itself.
The South Devon Green Party will consists of Torbay and Teignbridge councils, along with the western half of the South Hams (which are the wards of Bickleigh & Shaugh, Cornwood & Sparkwell, Ivybridge Woodlands, Ivybridge Central & Ivybridge Filham, Yealmpton, Wembury & Brixton, Newton & Noss,Erme Valley, Charterlands, Thurlestone, Westville and Alvington, Kingsbridge North,Kingsbridge East, Salcombe and Malborough).
The shiny new Totnes and District Green Party with take over the eastern half of the South Hams (including the following wards: Eastmoor, South Brent, Dartington, Totnes Town, Totnes Bridgetown, East Dart, Marldon, Avon & Harbourne, West Dart, Allington & Loddiswell, Salstone, Stokenham, Skerries, Dartmouth Townstal, Dartmouth and Kingswear)
The regoranisation will come in June 2010, and be too late to affect anything the Green Party does in the run up to the General Election. But it’s intended to build on the local government election successes the Greens achieved in 2009. Apparently they have three councillors. We know Paula Black is on Devon County Council – but where are the others? If you know drop us a line.
• How big can The Green Party get in South Devon? And will reorganising help them become electable? Comments below please.

I hear via my sources that the other two are gathered together with their little chums on Totnes Town council and currently pondering the weighty question of where to site an additional dog-poo bin.

Many thanks to all who got in touch about the Green Party councillors in South Devon. Who are:
Paula Black (as noted)
Jacqui Hodgson (Totnes town council)
Alan Gorman (Totnes town council)
Indeed, we’d even covered the story ourselves in the dim and distant November, 2009! Shucks. And remember – especially if your memory is as porous as ours – the Greens can add to that number with the by-election for Totnes Town Council on Thursday, March 11.

Translated:- personality clashes and infighting has forced the South Devon Green Party to split itself into two separate parties; on totally illogical areas crosscutting council and parliamentary boundaries. Watch out Paula!

Dr Richard Lawson, who was to have been the Green Party Parliamentary Candidate for Weston-super-Mare, has regretfully decided to withdraw his candidacy, in order to increase the chance of the Liberal Democrats taking the seat from the Conservatives.
