Exeter City Council's Empty Homes Service in search of empty homes

Exeter City Council Empty Homes Service

Exeter City Council’s Empty Homes Service is scouring the city and beyond for much-needed housing.

The search for empty homes not only covers the city but also focuses on East Devon, Mid Devon and the Teignbridge area.

Exeter has nearly 50,000 dwellings, according to 2008 Council Tax figures, and 554 have been empty for over six months. The most common causes of properties becoming empty are occupants moving into care or dying, repossession or lack of funds to complete renovation projects.

The job of the council’s Empty Homes Service is simple: to get those homes back into use and help bring down the city’s housing waiting list, which currently stands at 5,700 households.

Part proof that the council is doing a good job in tracking down empty homes comes with the council being asked to carry out the same service outside of the city in East Devon, Mid Devon and Teignbridge. Each authority pays the city council a sum of money to carry out the service in their own area. The City Council also works closely with housing associations and providers in their search.

Are you sure Teignbridge pays Exeter? We have our own Empty Homes Officer, in fact I think Exeter copied some of her ideas. Our EHO has been doing some innovative work to help shop owners get grants and loans to bring back flats above shops back in to use providing homes for the homeless and an income for hard pressed small businesses.
