St Thomas Gospel Choir pick up Devon Performing Arts Festival prize

The gospel choir of St Thomas

St Thomas Gospel Choir warbled their way to the Co-op Choir Shield at the Devon Performing Arts Festival at Exeter’s South Street Baptist Church on Saturday, March 6

Formed in 2006 there are no auditions to join the choir, and a whole range of abilities, ages, and faiths take part in the choir, which on competition day was led and conducted by assistant director Reuben Collings and accompanied on the piano by Kathy Rufolo, musical director. The choir performed two contrasting songs, Pass Me Not and Where do I go?

They competed against two other Devon choirs, Mellow D and Moor Harmony. The small choir class was adjudicated by musician Penny Jenkins, who has a broad experience in singing and has performed throughout Europe.

St Thomas scored 91 points, and received an Honours Certificate and the Co-op Choir Shield for Outstanding performance, technically and artistically.

Reuben said: “The choir has put in a lot of hard work and effort over the last couple of months in preparation for the festival and winning the shield has really shown us how we can pull together as a team and produce an awesome performance. With this being our first ever time singing in the festival we are all delighted to have won”

Yes, the festival was a great experience for the choir and they are looking forward to more opportunities to sing throughout Devon. New members are always welcome to call in on a Wednesday evening :) (we don't do any warbling tho!)
