Planned elections for 12 seats on Exeter City Council due to be held on Thursday, May 6 have been formally cancelled today (Wednesday, March 25).
A third of the seats on the city council would normally have been due for election on Thursday, May 6. However, the legislation to implement a new unitary council will mean that there will be elections for all 40 seats on the new unitary council on Thursday, May 5, 2011.
In the meantime, those councillors in seats on the existing Exeter City Council that would have been due for contest in May 2010 will automatically have their term of office extended unless they inform the council they do not wish to continue. If any councillor decides not to continue this would trigger a by-election. Thecouncil will know if there are to be any by-elections from this process on Monday, March 29.
Currently, this means that there will only be a single by-election for an already vacant seat in the Pennsylvania ward. This seat has been vacant since January when former councillor Alex Bond stood down.
Anyone wishing to stand for the vacant seat of Pennsylvania (and any other seat which might be subject to a by-election) must have their candidate nomination with the Ccouncil by noon on Thursday, April 8. There is no fee for candidates. Advice on how to go about this can be obtained from the Elections Office on 01392 265141 or at www.exeter.gov.uk/elections.
