Have you noticed that recycling in Plymouthis… a bit… rubbish? You’re not the only one! Plymouth City Council was named in Parliament by environment minister Dan Norris as one of the few councils that fails to meet its own targets!
Plymouth City Council was the only council west of Bristol to miss it’s recycling target – it had aimed to recycle 31 per cent of its waste, but failed.
With the proviso of incinerator money being that Plymouth improves its recycling, it would be hard to be much worse. Nevertheless, the city council is extending its household waste effort to keep in line with the PFI incinerator requirements.
Stuart Bonar, Lib Dem PPC for Plymouth Moor View, told the PRSD: “This comes as no surprise. When I checked up on the council’s green record last year I found that the Tories had failed to deliver on manifesto promises to increase the number of recycling banks and to broaden the range of items that could be recycled.
“One thing they could do is to replace the bins in the city centre so that they have separate bits for recyclable waste like paper and drinks cans, as well as regular rubbish. There is a lot more that could be done, but, personally, I am just not convinced that the Tories really care that much about improving our environment.
“If people want politicians locally to stand up for the environment and make Plymouth a better, cleaner, greener city then they should vote Liberal Democrat this year. We are the green party.”
