Are we surprised that Matt Chorley, London editor of the Western Morning News, was able to crowbar ‘immigration’ into the first para of his story about political opinion in the South West? No not really. The word was used once toward the ends of his piece. Then again ‘exciting’, which he also quotes, was only used once, too… and ‘smug’ wasn’t used at all.
Matt is flexing his hippie muscle (we reckon it’s a WMN thing), and travelling the South West in a VW camper van to find out what those in the region really think of the forthcoming elections in his marginal mystery tour – it’s enough to make you scared to go out.
In the third day of his roving reporting Matt turned up in Newton Abbot, and at the end of his piece came across Mr and Mrs Connett who ‘were always Tory at one time’.
Mr Connett told him: “People are talking about the lack of jobs, and in the influx of immigrants.”
(It’s because Newton Abbot has been soooo affected by immigration, obviously.)
“What we need is another Margaret Thatcher,” Mrs Connett added.
Cue Newton Abbot Tory wannabe Anne Marie Morris?
