Lower the voting age to 16! Says South West Devon Lib Dem candidate Anna Pascoe

South West Devon Lib Dem candidate

Anna Pascoe, Lib Dem parliamentary candidate for South West Devon, reiterated, her and the Lib Dem’s, commitment to lowering the voting age to 16, at a mock election conducted among pupils at Ridgeway School, Plymton.

Anna told the PRSD: “Events such as this highlight just how politically connected many of the young people in this country are.

“People often talk of voter apathy, but that is primarily the fault of the stagnant state of British Politics over the past through years. If other young people have the same level of interest on display today I have no qualms with 16 and 17 year olds gaining the right to vote; and hope that by getting youths voting at a younger age we will engender a connection to their country’s politics that will continue throughout their lives. ”

Gary Streeter, who’s fighting to retain his seat and was the only other candidate to attend the event has consistently opposed a lowering of the voting age unless the current level of those who currently exercise their right to vote increases hugely.

Anna said: “Gary seems to want an increase in the proportion of the population who vote, but his party proposes nothing solid about how to achieve this.

“We Lib Dems are committed to wide, sweeping election reforms, including a lowering of the voting age, which will create a fairer electoral system and encourage engaged young people like those on display today to vote and hopefully draw out many of their parents who may have been turned of by modern tit for tat politics and an unfair voting system.”

The event saw students representing each of the three major parties an all children from years 7-9 were asked to vote.

To put it into Yoda-speak. "The wrong end of the stick she has." I am all in favour of the maxim that "There should be no taxation without representation". People under the age of eighteen should not pay income tax, neither however, should they have the vote. Let's just make things simple. At the age of eighteen, you should have the right to vote, start to pay taxes, drive, have sex, drink alcohol, marry, join the armed forces, get a tattoo, stand for Parliament, do anything you damn well want in fact. However, before then you don't get to do b*gger all. Why? Because most sixteen year olds are idiots. I know I was, and so were all my friends at that age. Once you get to an age where the state can take money out of your pocket via income tax you get to have a say in how it is run. No sooner, no later. Simples.
