Hiking VAT to 20 per cent will hit lower income households hardest, making a mockery of Lib Dem election promises and Govenrment claims that this is a progressive budget, according to the South Devon Green Party.
In response to the Chancellor George Osborne’s Emergency Budget announcement Corinne Lindsey, South Devon Green Party spokesperson in Teignbridge, told the PRSD: “We are gravely concerned to see VAT being raised. Of all the taxes, this one has the greatest impact on those who are currently struggling the most.
“Also, the effects of yesterday’s announcement will have a massive impact on local government and communities, as we warned during the general election campaign.
“The enforced freeze on council tax is a crude attempt by central government to shift the blame for soon-to-be disappearing public services onto local government. Not only is the Government desperate to avoid criticism for their own ruthless economic policy, but they’re limiting the flexibility available to local councils such as Teignbridge to fairly manage the cuts the Government is demanding.
“The public sector pay freeze which will affect many at the district council, which may seem reasonable to some, will in fact amount to a pay-cut to some of those on lower incomes once inflation is taken into account.”
