A new website listing vegetarian accommodation and eating places in Devon was launched this week. Vegetariandevon.com provides vegetarian and vegan visitors with the only definitive listing (or do you know different!) of meat-free establishments in the county.
You can get vegetarian options almost everywhere these days, and there are plenty of ‘veggie friendly’ listings. But it is quite difficult to find somewhere to stay or eat that is exclusively vegetarian. The people who run these places will invariably be vegetarian themselves and know how to prepare really tasty food, there will always be a good turn over of produce so you won’t get served up anything that’s been lurking at the back of the freezer for a while!
To be honest, the real motivation for me creating this site was that we decided to start a vegetarian B&B at our farmhouse on Dartmoor, and we were looking around to see where we could advertise. A quick trawl through the various vegetarian and vegan websites showed loads of listings, but we found that most of them were ‘veggie friendly’.
Anyone who is vegetarian knows how disappointing meals out can be, so we just wanted to take the guesswork out of the equation and put up concise list, and also a map, so it is easy for visitors to see where all these places are. There are just 18 venues at present, but they are spread quite well over Devon, so it is possible to take a meat-free touring holiday in Devon and see most of the county! Of course, we hope that everyone will enjoy the welcome and variety on offer; there are some great places in lovely locations.
We have also included some links to places and people in Devon that visitors might like to visit or at least know about. These tend to have an interest in the environment, sustainability, arts, crafts, artisan food, wildlife or healthy living. Devon is so rich in its cultural life, and we have tried to reflect that.
