The planned Devonport Blockade on Monday, November 1 has been given the backing by the Green Party in the South West. The blockade is organised by the group Trident Ploughshares, who are protesting the continuance of the Trident weapon system.
Plymouth Green Party is joined by other Green Parties in the West Country, which give their support and backing to Trident Ploughshares.
Speaking on the issue of Trident, David Wildman of Plymouth Green Party told the PRSD: “Where’s the logic in having nuclear weapons in a city of a quarter of a million people? The government cannot justify the vast sums of money spent on Trident, whilst it is debatable on its actual effectiveness.”
On the role of Trident in the city, David said: “On Camel’s Head there are nuclear subs rotting nearby in the Dockyard, sewage works as well; while there are plans to build an incinerator! How is this acceptable?
“The Greens are the only party voicing concerns on this issue. Before the election, the Lib Dems were with us on this, but like everything else, they’ve changed their minds.”
Plymouth Green Party ask for all local residents who wish to cut Trident to come to the protest and show their support for the blockaders. The protest begins at 6am on Monday, November 1 morning.
