What Fire Minister Bob Neill has against protecting vulnerable people from being burnt to death, only he will know – he talked out the second reading of Torbay MP Adrian Sanders’ Fire Safety (Protection of Tenants) Bill.
Adrian introduced the Bill to ensure would ensure that all rented properties, in both the private and social sectors, have working smoke detection systems, and had the Minister allowed MPs to vote on the proposals, the bill could have moved to the next stage of scrutiny.
Adrain told the PRSD: “It was always going to be tough to even get the chance to debate this bill due to the archaic rules we have over private members bills so I am not too disappointed.
“We have the chance to address a number of concerns and consult with officials and ministers before the bill comes back to Parliament in January.”
“It was very heartening to see support come from Labour, as well Torbay’s other MP Sarah Wollaston. My only hope is that the Conservatives come round to the idea that improving fire safety for the most vulnerable is actually a very good thing.”
