South West MEP becomes 500th signatory of peace declaration

South West Lib Dem MEP Graham Watson has become the 500th signatory of a declaration calling on the Israeli and Palestinian authorities to embrace peace in the Middle East.

Put together by Peace Lines, an organisation that aims to bring together Nobel laureates and prominent politicians, the statement calls for an end to the blockade of Gaza and rocket attacks on Israelis, and also the release of political prisoners on both sides. Graham joins a long list of supporters including Nobel laureates, Presidents, and prominent academics.

Graham told the PRSD: “The conflict between Israel and Palestine divides many. It is time we recognise that wrongs have been, and are still being, committed by both sides. If there is to be a lasting peace in the Middle East, this must end.

“The EU is an example of how by focussing on a common interest such as peace, rather than difference, great things can be achieved. By signing this declaration I have expressed my hope that the EU can help to bring an end to the Blockade and violence in the region.

“Ultimately though, it is up to the people of Palestine and Israel to choose peace.”
