Plymouth University students occupation in Roland Levinsky building to protest Coalition's education cuts

Students at Plymouth University have organised at sit in at the Roland Levinsky building to protest agains the Coalition Government’s plans to slash education funding and increase in tuition fees.

As the National Day of Action, or Day X, Plymouth University students have taken Room 008 of the Roland Levinsky building.

Emma Wilson, vice president education and welfare at Plymouth’s University’s Students’ Union said: “The coalition proposals to cut funding and expect students to foot the massive hike in tuition fees is disgusting.

“Students here feel strongly enough to stand up and be counted and demand that their university discloses certain information such as exactly how much tuition fees will increase to and a guarantee that widening participation will not slide down the universities list of priorities.”

A student involved said: “This is a really important national awareness event to show the coalition that we will not take these cuts and fee increases lightly. As well as this on a local level it allows us to get answer from the university which we have previously been denied.”

Meanwhile, keep an eye on the occupation:

all the best

Cliff

The future of our young people is being stolen from them through cutbacks, increased tuition fees and the fact successive governments have failed to invest and have faith in the people of this country. Both Labour and the Tories and now the Lib-Dems have bent over backwards to support globalisation, the multi-nationals and the rich bankers, yet fail to support our future and the prospects of young people. Yes support the students, and well done to the pupils of KEVICC today on their action.

Lets hope they get some learning done while they're in there!
