The South Devon Green Party has written to the leader of Teignbridge District Council Alan Connett, to express its deep concern over the proposals for cutting sick pay for all employees for the first three days of sick leave.
In the letter, Teignbridge Branch co-ordinator David Bailey and chair Keith Johnson point to the severity that such a measure will have upon the families and welfare of those to be affected.
Such action is likely to result in rents and mortgages not being paid, essentials for children being denied, a massive increase in work related stress, poorer work relations, an increase in poor work judgements as sick people come to work, plus no doubt a massive increase of sickness at work.
A Green Party spokesperson told the PRSD: “For the past 150 years we have been improving working conditions in this country to an acceptable level. This type of action fails to see the human element.
“People working at Teignbridge District Council are not excessively paid, like the bankers who have driven this financial mess, and a loss of three days’ pay could result in hardship for many people.
“What the leadership, who were once thought to be on the side of social justice, fail to fully comprehend is the serious damage this action will cause. Any civilised society recognises and accepts that people become ill. This threatened theft of three days’ pay from families who need to rely on every single penny is an utter outrage. Rather than a properly thought-out finacially driven cost-cutting measure, this attack on the hard-working staff at the council looks more like a bullying tactic.”
Keith Johnson South Devon Gree Party chair said: “Should the council vote to accept this draconian return to Victorian values and employment practices, we shall follow the attendance of all Teignbridge councillors, especially that of Mr Connett, very closely. If councillors do not follow their own rules and attend every civic duty, we shall expect those councillors allowances be docked accordingly. I trust that we will see many runny noses in the council chamber throughout the winter.”
