As we crash head long into Christmas the press are rummaging through the silly story sections in order to find something not related to the snow, so it is not surprising to see that Vince and other Lib Dem ministers have been outed for being, well… Lib Dems.
Apparently it is shocking to find that Lib Dem ministers don’t like Tory policies. My Labour Twitter Friend (and PPC for South West Devon at the last election) Luke Pollard announced this morning that it was ‘another day… another Lib Dem disaster’ as the BBC tell us that it was not just Vince Cable who doesn’t like what the Tories are doing in Government .
Well, I for one, am pleased, if this coalition is to truly work we need to be constantly challenging what is right for the nation, and if we disagree with the Tory leadership, we really shouldn’t be afraid to say.
Yes it will mean lots of headlines like ‘Coalition government in serious rift on Tory policy’. So what !
I know Luke and the papers see this as some kind of major incident, but it really isn’t. We are, after all different political parties, with different political views. I think it’s perfectly okay to disagree with your Coalition Partners, as it is to listen and change your views.
If we really want to change politics, we have to create a forum where new ideas can be aired and criticism sought. Yes there will be arguments and sometimes we will have to agree to disagree, but if we can debate, challenge and listen and learn I am convinced we serve the nation well.
The fact is, as my mum used to say: “Nobody is always right about everything.” Maybe if previous Governments had learnt that we wouldn’t have had the poll tax or gone to war on the say of a dodgy dossier.
