East Devon Greens supports Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s Fish Fight Campaign

East Devon Green Party has lent its support to Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s Fish Fight – a campaign with chimes with the Green Party’s manifesto pledges from the 2010 general election  to ‘replace the Common Fisheries Policy with policies that prioritise protection of the oceans and provide sustainable support to fishing communities’.

Green Party policy principles include ‘fish only to be caught for human consumption’. The policy document also calls for the phasing out of ‘catching of small species, for non-edible uses such as fish meal’.

Sharon Pavey East Devon Green Party co-ordinator told the PRSD: “Like many people, I watched Hugh’s Fish Fight on television and was appalled to see so many dead fish being thrown away as the quotas did not allow them to be landed. I was particularly struck by the images of so many sharks being tossed into a heap to die, the unfortunate victims of intensive tuna fishing.”

Henry Gent, Green Party member in Broadclyst said: “As Hugh’s River Cottage shop and cafe is in our East Devon Green Party patch in Axminster, our members have seen the programme and wanted to offer their support for the campaign.

“The Green Party wants radical reform of agricultural and fisheries policies. I think many people are concerned about the way food production is going, on land and on sea. Family farms are driven out of business by competition from factory farms, and those who fish with sustainable methods cannot compete on price with intensive harvesting and farming of fish.  The government is more interested in looking after big food businesses than in looking after the environment.”

The East Devon Greens meet once a month, rotating meetings at different towns in East Devon, They have a coffee morning at Christ Church Hall on North Street in Exmouth on Saturday February 19, from 10am–noon. Tea, coffee and cake is free of charge and the coffee morning is open to everyone. Plus there will be a play area provided for children.
