Residents, community and environmental groups, and even a samba band, will be out in force on Saturday, January 29 to protest against the two incinerators that could soon be forced on the region.
Earlier this month, the South West Devon Waste Partnership awarded the contract for a municipal mass burn incinerator in Devonport to be built by MVV Umvelt.
Since the decision, waste giant Viridor, which currently has a planning application for a 275,000 tonne incinerator at New England Quarry near Lee Mill, has confirmed it will press ahead with its controversial scheme.
“Our message is that we are united against incineration in Devon,” said Charlotte Mills, of EcoIvy, one of the coordinators.
“We have people coming from Plymouth, Ivybridge, Totnes, Ermington, Yealmpton, Noss Mayo and South Brent. But we are urging everyone locally who oppose incineration to come and join us. There are cheaper, greener and cleaner alternatives available.”
The marchers will also be demanding that the business case for an incinerator that has been compiled by the South West Devon Waste Partnership be rejected by Devon County Council, Torbay and Plymouth Councils for being ‘fiscally irresponsible’.
“On the February 7-8, all three councils will review the Waste Partnership’s Business Plan. Our message to them is to reject it as fiscally
irresponsible,” said Charlotte.
“We think it is completely reckless to give an incinerator company a lucrative 25 year waste contract. At a time when people are losing their jobs, the waste company will be laughing all the way to the bank.”
The march starts at noon at the Watermark Centre in Ivybridge on Saturday, January 29.
Speakers will include Charlotte Mills, Eco Ivy; Ian Smith from PL21; Tony Staunton of the Plymouth Anti-Incineration group Incineration is Wrong
