Totnes Bookshop shortlisted for best independent bookshop of the year

The Totnes Bookshop is one of four in the South West to be shortlisted for the The Bookseller’s Best Independent of the Year Award.

It’s the only Devon bookshop to make it through, with the others from the South West being The Forest Bookshop, Coleford, Gloucestershire, St Ives Bookshop, St Ives, Cornwall and Mr B’s in Bath.

Devon fares pretty well with independent bookshops, the Torbay Bookshop having picked up the award in 2006.

At a time when the chain bookshops are disappearing, The Bookseller says it has received a record number of entries, with more than 40 indies across the UK and Ireland bidding to bag the £5,000 prize.

As Neill Denny, editor in chief at the Bookseller says on The Bookseller site (where you can see the full shortlist): “The sheer volume of entries, of which were at a remarkably high standard, show the independent sector can not only survive but thrive in what has been an incredibly difficult year for bricks and mortar retail.”

The winner will be announced at the Bookseller Industry Awards, to be held at London’s Park Lane Hilton on Monday, May 16.
