Bus cuts and rising fares – Exeter to discuss public transport

In the wake of cuts to bus services and rising fares, the Campaign for Better Transport in Devon has called a public meeting to enable residents of Exeter to express their views about public transport in the city.

The meeting will take place on Tuesday, March 1 in the Rowe Hall at the Mint Methodist Church in Fore Street, beginning at 7pm. City Bus Operator Stagecoach have been invited to the meeting as well as all of Exeter’s city and county councillors.

Walter Brown, chair of the Campaign for Better Transport Group in Devon, told the PRSD: “At a time when all the talk is of bus cuts and increasing fares, it is important for people to be able to discuss any aspects of concern they may have about public transport provision in Exeter. We hope this public meeting will provide an opportunity for the public to express their concerns directly to Stagecoach and the city’s councillors and establish some positive ways forward.”

The Campaign for Better Transport has been active in trying to improve the transport planning for Exeter’s future expansion. With Exeter set to see the building of large numbers of houses and flats around Pinhoe, Rydon Lane and Topsham Road, the group has been urging for huge improvements to rail and bus services as a pre-condition to allowing such developments in these areas.

The group has also been pressing for permanently lower child fares and student fares. Campaigners argue that many students won’t be able to afford travel to college if cuts are imposed as currently being proposed.
