Green Party Devon County Councillor Paula Black has been out enjoying the improved safety of the new pavement on the High Street in Totnes.
She told the PRSD: “There are times as a councillor when you have to make decisions that seem controversial, demanding that this work was implemented was always going to raise some concerns over the conservation of the High Street.
“As a community, many residents had complained that the lack of an adequate pavement and speeding traffic endangered them. That situation could not continue, pedestrian safety is an absolute priority and traders suggested that it was creating an economic black-spot.
“The results of this pavement widening are a huge success, people are now able to walk on both sides of the street, traffic is slower and safer, and the independent businesses are seeing an increase in footfall.
“The whole area now feels more like a calmer environment where people can stop to look in the shop windows, safely enter shops and chat to their friends.
“I am sure we are now going to see the empty shops on this run full of exciting new businesses that will benefit the town.”
