Plymouth Greens call on all to join in Earth Day

Plymouth Green Party are celebrating Earth Day, held on Saturday, March 26, between 8.30pm-9.30pm. The event began in Sydney, Australia in 2007, and last year millions of people in more than 120 countries took part.

The idea is simple: turn off the lights for one hour. People can get involved in various ways – by fundraising for WWF, by running events and by telling their friends. Or by sharing a candle-lit meal with your loved one, something Green Party member, David Wildman, will be doing on Saturday evening.

David, a prospective candidate for Honicknowle in the upcoming Plymouth local election, told the PRSD: “This is a great event to share the idea of cutting back and thinking of the planet. I fully endorse the WWF slogan of One Hour, One World, Our Future; and urge everyone to get involved. So, switch off your lights and get involved!”

Plymouth Greens are urging people to pass on the information of the event to their family and friends, inviting them to register at earthhour.wwf.org.uk/register.

David said: “But it’s much more than just the hour. All of us can contribute by doing simple things, from writing to our MPs and councillors, changing to more efficient light bulbs, re-using old water bottles, to signing petitions. Under the weight of such pressure we sometimes feel as if we contribute nothing. But this is about changing behaviour and viewpoints. Little by little we can achieve a lot.”

Plymouth Green Party has a growing list of members, and it will be standing candidates in the upcoming Plymouth local election, following on from standing candidates in last year’s parliamentary election – for the first time in almost two decades. The party would like to hear the views and opinions of others on this event, email David ply...@yahoo.com
